To get 20 — 50 hours/week shop access: you'll need a current membership, and a shop
key for access during non-staffed hours . The Bike
Project currently has less than 10 staffed hours per week, but members have
access to the shop 20 — 50 hours/week, whenever the UC-IMC building is
open, plus evening / weekend meeting
hours, late-night hours for shows and similar UC-IMC events, plus additional
member-access-only hours which we are working to set up; we hope to release
a member-only hours-schedule by September 2008. Although the building may be open, the Bike Project door
is locked. You need: a shop key. >
To get a shop key: you'll need to take the Shop Orientation Class
and provide a $20 key deposit. The Shop Orientation Class
reviews safety and security for the co-op shop, plus other rules/guidelines for
working with the tools and materials in the shop. The class is a single
40-minute session, see schedule below. Shop keys can be
held by current Bike Project members, who
have taken the Shop Orientation Class, and who provide a $20 one-time
refundable key deposit. Note: until you have taken this class, you may not work in the shop without a staffer
present, and you may not close the shop alone. The $20 key deposit is refunded in full upon return of key. The Shop Rules
are available on h t t p: / / t h e b i k e p r o j e c t . o r g / w i k i
To get 24-hour shop access, you'll need to: join the UC-IMC (additional fee),
or make a 3-month Bike Project staffing commitment.
Optional 24-hours/day, 7-days/week
workshop access is available, but requires a Bike Project staffing
commitment (e-mail us if
interested), or purchase of a UC-IMC
membership (standard price as of June 2008 is $55) Annual Bike Project
memberships that started before June 8, 2008 already include 24-hour/7-day access
for the remaining term of these memberships; in these cases UC-IMC membership
is only encouraged, not required.
Shop Orientation Class
This member-only class — covering basic shop security, safety, and usage rules — is required to get a shop key for off-hours access and for any work alone in the shop. If you'd like to receive a shop key the day of the class, don't forget to bring $20 (cash or check) for the (refundable) key deposit. Please e-mail us at least 48 hours in advance if you plan to attend a Shop Orentation Class, so we can be sure to prepare enough handouts and keys.
